- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2010This is a great book for all kinds of artists. The presentation and content brings an international view of the use of color and color psychology. It makes you think twice about your color palettes, and with great results.
A must have.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2012For the life of me, I could not understand how and why some colors worked with others while others didn't. This book showed very clearly and explained the reasons behind it using many masters of color theory to get the point across.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2006I have started reading this book, so be warned.
My initial reaction is that it is a very good survey of color, the author(s) do a good enough job introducing color.
What I disagree with is their recommendation for color systems, but that's a personal opinion. As more and more people use the computer and (Adobe) software for color correction, I would tend towards the rbg + cmy color wheel.
Everything else I read is, like I said, a good introduction.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2012I am a college art professor and I use this book as a reference for my courses. the theories are concise and the examples very strong.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2017The walk through is incredible it guides with examples that you can relate to
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2011The title is misleading. This is not a "workbook". I would call it more of an "idea" book. If you read it cover to cover, you will learn a lot about color theory and how to use colors in the right way. If you are just getting started in graphic design or are even thinking about pursuing it as a career, this is a nice book to have on your shelf. However, if you are looking for a book that instructs and allows you to check your progress, this isn't what you need.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2014Great Textbook full of knowledge for the graphic designer or just someone who wants to learn and play around creating art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesantes Buch auf Englische Sprache

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best overall introduction to colour
Color Design Workbook is an introduction to colour theory, colour design and the emotional impact of colour which is about 1/2 information and 1/2 case studies supported by commentary. As such, it goes significantly further than most introductory guides in terms of what colour does and how to work with it. It also has a wealth of cutaway boxes giving additional snippets of information that are highly useful if you never happened to pick them up on the way. Overall, this is the best introductory book on colour I've seen, although it falls short of technical assessments of colour management in the digital world.
There are many books on colour, and even more general design books with a section on colour. This one covers all the basics -- additive and subtractive colour, colour theory and sample colour combinations -- but it goes beyond most of the books by giving a guide to emotional impact (although this covers only nine colours -- Black, White, Gray, Green, Purple, Orange, Red, Yellow, Blue) and compositional principles which apply specifically to colour design. It also covers the most important colour illusions, such as after-imaging.
Memorising everything in this book will not make you an expert on any particular part of colour design, but it will definitely give you a much broader understanding of all the issues in colour design than any other comparable book. To go much deeper, you will really need to go to specialist works on the particular areas of your interest.
Mercifully, less than half of this book is given over to case studies. Although case studies are always interesting and have an illustrative value, they don't have the same unique value in the internet-enabled world that they did in the 90s when it was hard to get hold of samples from lesser known brands.
Overall, this is a very attractively designed book which has a great deal to offer.
Warmly recommended.
