About the Author

Jack Kerouac was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1922, the youngest of three children in a Franco-American family. He attended local Catholic and public schools and won a scholarship to Columbia University in New York City, where he first met Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs. His first novel, The Town and the City, appeared in 1950, but it was On the Road, published in 1957 and memorializing his adventures with Neal Cassady, that epitomized to the world what became known as the “Beat generation” and made Kerouac one of the most best-known writers of his time. Publication of many other books followed, among them The Dharma Bums, The Subterraneans, and Big Sur. Kerouac considered all of his autobiographical fiction to be part of “one vast book,” The Duluoz Legend. He died in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1969, at the age of forty-seven.

The ramblings of this book must be approached with an understanding of the times in which it was written, and the final and pure disconnect of the main characters at the end.

    This wild ride of a novel had me wondering about mortality- not so much my own mortality, but that of some of the characters within. Sal Paradise/Jack Kerouac shares with us his search for...I don't know what. ON THE ROAD recounts some of Kerouac's traveling adventures but the true mystique lies in the fast, reckless, irresponsible, and dangerous lives he and his beatnik buddies lead. Apparently, in the late 1940's, a broke, semi-homeless hitchhiker was the cool thing to be. Kerouac's semi-autobiographical prose is quite poetic. But I hope there is more fiction than fact in this tale, because the characters in this novel are a bunch of misfits.

    In the midst of these road trips across America (and Mexico at the novel's climax) there's a lot of drugs, alcohol, womanizing, and stealing going on; all the things your mommy tells you not to do. Yet what I find most fascinating are some of the characters Jack partied with, some of whom became pioneers in the beatnik literary movement.
    Here's a little breakdown on who's who:
    Dean Moriarty=Neal Cassady
    Carlo Marx=Allan Ginsberg
    Bull Lee=William Burroughs

    Each of these literary figures partied way too hard and it's their life spans that amaze me.
    Dean Moriarty/Neal Cassady was a major drinker and the biggest A-hole in literature. He's selfish, irresponsible, and untrustworthy. He was also an absent father and a womanizer, just to name a few. But you can't help loving the guy because he knows how to have a good time. Cassady died in 1968 at the age of 41. The cause of his death was unknown but drugs were involved. No surprise there.

    Sal Paradise/Jack Kerouac died in 1969 at the age of 47 from an internal hemorrhage. A lifetime of drinking was the cause.

    Carlo Marx/Allan Ginsberg, to my shock, also a heavy drinker and drug user, died in 1997 at the age of 70.

    Here's the real kicker: Bull Lee/William Burroughs died in 1997 at age 83. Not only was he a big drinker, but he was a heroin addict. He also got away with "accidentally" shooting his wife in the head in Mexico during what he says was a drunken game of William Tell. Go figure.

    ON THE ROAD really focuses most on Dean Moriarty. Sal Paradise is obsessed with Dean's free spirit. This book deserves to be canonized as one of the best works of modern literature.

    I personally feel this book is amazing. I have always had a yearn for traveling, always wanting to go on a road trip around the United States, reading this book to me is exciting. Jack Kerouac wrote this novel in 3 weeks time, writing 7 years of his life into this great story. What a lot of people do not know is yes, he wrote this in 3 weeks, but it took many years for it to be finally published, he had to change and rewrite it over and over. In the first draft, all the real names and story of his life were in there, but no publishers liked that, so he changed it to what it is today.

    Another thing, I see many people saying there was no plot, there is not supposed to be one, if you had a diary (which reading this is like reading someone's diary) does that have a plot? Ann Frank did not have a plot, because it was a diary. His writing in this novel is like being told a life story with your friends, I don't mind how it is written, it is exciting as it would be traveling on the road not knowing what is going to happen next.

    Sal AKA Jack Kerouac always wanted to travel, after meeting Dean Moriarty AKA Neal Cassady, he finally got the inspiration and left to be on the road, traveling across the US, meeting really interesting people along the way. Along with finding a way to get around, he found many jobs to try to survive. Dean is one crazy free spirit who is a real bad influence on Sal, but a very big influence in his life at that, they go through some crazy situations together, and Sal learns a lot about life. Anyone I would think most people would love to just leave their lives and take off not knowing what was going to happen every second, I know I wish I could go on that road trip, but there is no way I would even go into the next town less than $50 bucks, unlike Sal who made it clear across the country on that.

    Another thing, is how interesting it is when he describes what places look like, I was born way way after the 40's and 50's and now live in Sacramento, and am very amazed that only 50 years ago, it was fields and hut like housing....my my what the world has come too, wishing I could eat burgers and shakes for less than two bucks...this is pretty much reading about history to me, and it's very interesting to learn about the many different things that happened before my time.

    I say if you have a yearn for traveling, and like reading a great book, this is a must-read.

    I am a bit of a weird 13-year-old in my views and opinions, the films I watch and like, the music I listen to and the books I read. I asked my English teacher if he'd read On the Road and what he'd thought of it. He told me he thought I should wait a few years before reading it basically because of it's content and the fact that the characters are laid-back, don't give a damn and take drugs.

    I'm glad I didn't take his advice (it was a bit late seeing as I'd already bought the book) because this is by far the best book I have ever read. The characters don't really give a damn, true, but laid-back they most certainly are not! Kerouac writes with relentless energy, and is such an interesting guy with all his stories (the majority of his works are semi-autobiographyical). Yes, Kerouac does mention some irrelevant things such as conversations with hobos or what he bought in a shop, but who cares about that when his story revolves around his admiration of Dean Moriarty, and their journey driving across America?! That latter part may sound like it could be rather tedious, but this book was written by Jack Kerouac, and he manages to avoid that. I love the part where Sal and Dean leave Carlo Marx in New York, and tell him they'll be back in thirty hours - they drive non-stop throughout the night, New York to Virginia in 10 hours.

    His unique writing style is something to behold, and at times it sounds almost poetic (the section in Part 1, Chapter 1 which starts with the sentence 'They pranced down the street like dingledodies...' is unforgettable).

    It's a shame that Kerouac died so young, and that he is only remembered for this book, because I think he had so much more to give. It's just fortunate that what he did give us, was On the Road.
